Reinvigorating a Community Resource

Done right, libraries can be vital community institutions. Grain was part of the team charged with creating a master plan for the Rochester Public Library (RPL).  We started by doing our research: a comprehensive audit of the existing 10 branches’ facilities and services, identifying best practices from peer library systems, and a study of the city’s physical and demographic landscape. The process led to enlightening conversations with RPL staff and service providers, as well as over 1,700 local residents. The resulting Branch Facilities and Operations Masterplan offers strategies to enhance library space and improve both access and service, as well as guidance on fundraising and capital investments. Perhaps most critically, our recommendations position RPL to be a national leader among libraries when it comes to equity.
